Boyd Eugene Jones was born July 5th 1961 in Beaver Oklahoma. He was the son of Gerald Marion Jones and Mary Ellen (Landers) Sprague.

Boyd grew up in the rural Elmwood area and attended Garrett Grade School. He attended Beaver High School and graduated with the class of 1982.  He then attended the Liberal Area Vocational Technical School for one year.

Boyd was active in FFA during his high school years. He showed steers each year at the spring shows. He would not be out worked when it came to brushing his calves and working their hair. His love for cattle and taking care of them was genuine and it was noted by many in the industry. His hard work paid off winning Grand Champion Steer at the Beaver Local Show.

Mary told Boyd early on in his working career, “Always give your employer more than he asks for and he will respect you. You will also deal with some customers that are hard to deal with. Learn to deal with them politely and limit your replies”.

Boyd worked at several jobs including National Beef in Liberal Kansas. He spent many years working at Downing’s Market in Beaver. He stocked shelves and sacked groceries among other duties. He enjoyed people and he was able to visit with many neighbors, relatives, and friends that came to the store.

Boyd was known for his love of people and animals. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation in a matter of moments. He was a kind caretaker to animals, especially strays. He always had time to pet and play with his animals.

Boyd departed this life on April 24th 2019 at the age of 57. His is survived by his Mother Mary Ellen Sprague, Stepfather John Sprague, one sister Kristina, along with many relatives and friends.

The family requests memorials to the Liberal Animal Shelter (620-626-0576) instead of flowers because Boyd loved helping animals.

I was a shock to learn of Boyd's passing yesterday. We had not known that he was experiencing any health problem. He was a friendly guy and conscientious in the performance of his job (very particular about how groceries got sacked, too). We will miss him, and want to extend our condolence to his mom, John, and all his co-workers at the Downing's Market.

I was so-saddened to hear of such a sudden-loss.
Tenderly, may the Lord in time help you cope with your sorrow
Gently, may your friends and family help ease your pain
Softly, may peace replace heartaches
May warmest memories remain forever

Boyd did indeed make friends with everyone he met at or through the store. I met him first when I was manager at the Nutrition Site and he handled my milk orders for. He did a job well, respected and appreciated the customers. I have been gone from Beaver almost two years but still have fond memories of and appreciation for Boyd. I know you will miss him tremendously as all who knew him in the community will. Grieve-as-you must, not-as-others will tell you is right, wrong or indifferent. May God bless you greatly.
FOR ALL PARENTS ~
"I'll lend you for a little-while
a child of mine," He said;
for you to love while he lives
and mourn when he is dead.
It may be four-or-five years,
twenty, more or even only three.
Will you till I call him back
take care of him for me?
He'll bring you joy to gladden you.
Shall his stay be brief,
you'll have his-lovely memories
as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay,
since all from earth return.
There are lessons taught down here
I wanted this child to learn.
I've looked the wide-world over
in my-search for teacher's true.
From the throngs crowding life's lanes,
I have selected you.
Now, I know you gave him all your love
and didn't think the labor vain.
Please do not hate me when I've come to call
to take him back again.
I fancied I heard you say
"Dear Lord, Thy will be done
for all-the-joy this child did bring;
we knew this risk of grief we'd run.
we sheltered him with tenderness
and loved him while we'd may;
for the happiness we've known
we'll ever-grateful stay.
Since the angels called for him
much-sooner than we planned;
we'll brave the bitter-grief and try to understand!"

This totally shocked me, all the above comments are correct, Joyce and I started working with Boyd in later 80's at BCSW, and he advanced through the program through a interesting walk in life, we watched him grow in maturity, and going to work at Downings was is pride and joy. He always greeted people, and did everything he could do to help you find your items on your shopping list. I always got a big smile and a big hug, he would tell me how long he had been working there and was so proud of that accomplishment. He will be missed. I was proud of his accomplishments with him.

My heart goes out to family and friends. God bless you, and comfort you.
Sincerely, Pat Sandusky

I always hoped Boyd would carry my groceries because he took such pride in such a simple act and he was always eager to strike up a conversation about the weather or anything little thing that caught his attention. God truly blessed me through just his little acts of kindness in and seeing the smlle on his face when he said, "Have a good day" because I knew he truly meant it. Rest in peace, Boyd, where the weather is always nice and everyone has a great day. You will be missed!
