Carl Dean O'Hair

June 20, 1928 — September 23, 2019

Carl Dean O’Hair was born at Catesby, Oklahoma, on June 20, 1928, to Charles Everett O’Hair and Irene Elizabeth (Polin) O’Hair.  He was raised on their farm with 2 older sisters, Edna Lois and Wilda Mae, and one younger brother Darrell Gene.

In 1945 his parents and brother moved to Missouri and Carl stayed behind to finish high school.  He was decisively independent and during his high school years he managed the family farm and even drove a school bus from Catesby to Shattuck.

On October 17, 1950, Carl married his sweetheart, Rosabelle Wallen, at the First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo, Texas.  Together they had 5 children, Suzanne, Sally Jan, Kevin C., Cindy Lee and Sheila Kay.  Carl and his family lived at his parent’s homestead until 1962 when the family moved into the house Carl and George Mixon built just up the road.  In 1968 Rosie passed away after a long illness.  Carl was then handed the task of raising 5 kids all while he worked to make a living.  Neighbors, friends and family within the Catesby community and stretching to the far corners of Slapout, May, Shattuck and Laverne offered helping hands to uplift Carl and his family.

In 1970 Carl married Carole Jean Stout Kelln and her 3 children, Grayson F., Gentry K. and Keri Jo joined the O’Hair family.  Together the whole clan helped out on the family farm and ranch operation while managing to keep up with school and church activities.

Over the years Carl served on the Shattuck School Board, Soil Conservation District Board, Bickford Cemetery Board, SHS Quarterback Club and Shattuck’s 50 Plus Alumni.  He loved bird hunting and working on machinery with his family and friends.  He was also the official driver’s ed instructor for his kids and several of his grandkids.  His philosophy was if you didn’t know how to use a clutch, you had better listen up and learn.

Carl was an active member of the Catesby Methodist Church where he attended from birth to his elder years.  And you had better be prompt and ready when he hollered “Time to go!”  Sunday mornings, Family Nights and Christmas Eve services were most memorable occasions.

In later years Carl met many new friendly faces who cheerfully served his elder care needs.  His caregivers showered him with hugs and funny t-shirts to wear, even as he badgered them to get busy, and no doubt considered himself the boss of the outfit.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Rosie, sister, Edna Hiner, brother in law, Clifford Hiner, sister, Wilda Ward, brother in law, Henry Ward, sister in law, Peggy Lintzenich, and brother in law, Eddie Lintzenich.

Carl passed peacefully from this life on September 23, 2019, at the age of 91.

Carl is survived by his brother Darrell O’Hair and sister in law Mary O’Hair, children, Suzie and Jack Woods, Sally Stewart, Kevin and Kathy O’Hair, Cindy and Danny Engelman, Sheila and Rick Meyer, Grayson Kelln, Gentry Kelln, Keri and Ken Bodley; grandchildren, Valerie and Steve Haith, Ken and Katie Woods, Liz and Jeremy Messerly, Andrew Woods, Kristal and Jeremy Lewis, Charles and Katie Stewart, Wendy Eaton, Sean and Fawn O’Hair, Kourtney O’Hair, Sam and Erin Engelman, Ben and Emily Engelman, Matt and Katherine Meyer, Adam and Erika Meyer, Zach and Laykin Meyer, Becky Kelln, Carl Kelln, Wyatt Kelln, Harley and Kavan Henning, Jacob and Abby Bodley, Kadee and Ryan Davis, Kelln Bodley; great grandchildren, Brayden Woods, Peyton Woods, Kenzie Messerly, Aidan Messerly, Jade Lewis, Xander Lewis, Logan Stewart, Sgt.
