Elmer Lee Hancock was born October 15th, 1935, Bassett, Virginia, to James E. and Minnie H. Elgin Hancock.
Elmer grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southern Virginia, with his mother and younger brother and sister. His father was killed in the Battle of the Bulge when he was nine years old.
Elmer attended the Basset School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1959, where he trained to be a medic. He served in Germany and South Korea before being stationed at the Walter Reed Medical Center, which he said was the highlight of his military service. He served ten years in the military. He was a member of the American Legion Post 137, Hooker, OK, for over fifty years.
On February 28th, 1970, Elmer joined the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, graduating with the 26th academy. He retired after twenty years on June 27th, 1990. He started work the next day, on June 28th, for the Oklahoma Driver’s License Division. He retired after thirteen years as a driver’s license examiner. Elmer then drove a mail truck for ten years. He always said it wasn’t a coincidence that his RA military number started with 524 and his OHP badge number was 524. He was proud to serve his country and his adopted state of Oklahoma.
If you knew Elmer, you knew of his passion for rescuing or helping abused and neglected animals. He always had pet food and water in his truck just in case he saw an animal in need. The animals he rescued are too many to count. He also opened his home to children who needed a place to stay. He was a huge fan of OU football.
Elmer passed away on May 2nd, 2026, at his home.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, brother Robert Hancock, sister Betty Hancock Poteat, and niece Cathy Harris.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Robbie Brinkley Hancock. His many nieces and nephews that held a special place in his heart. His fur babies. His driver, Alex Estrada; his helper, Don White; and his nurse, Scotty King.
