Janice Sue “Jan” Stewart, daughter of the late William Henry and Viola Mae (Martin) Stewart, was born October 18, 1948, and was the youngest of 5 children with 3 brothers and a sister arriving ahead of her. She passed away April 29, 2024, at Alva, at the age of 75 years.

She was raised and educated in Alva, attending Washington School, Jr. High and High School where she was very successful in the Home Economics program. Jan was awarded the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award and attended FHA National Convention in St. Louis.

The summer following her High School graduation, Jan and her sister, Sharon, moved to Chicago and lived with their brother Dan and worked for Con/Edison, earning enough to finance her college. Jan enrolled at Northwestern Oklahoma State College with scholarships and started her preparation for a lifetime in the classroom.

During her Jr. Year in college she was working in the sewing/notions/ material section of T.G.&Y. Varity with a high school friend who had just returned from Vietnam—Kirk Fisher. Their first date was October 19, 1969, one day after Jan turned 21. They were married February 14, 1970, and recently celebrated 54 years of marriage.

Coming off their honeymoon they made their home in Beaver for the next 50 years. Jan was a big part of the store they owned working evenings and weekends. She also was a Lab Tech for Dr. Harvey’s Clinic. Her calling was to be an educator and she spent 40 years in a classroom where she had the opportunity to influence hundreds of students.

In 1973 Jan and Kirk had their first child, a boy, they named Kevin. Two years later in 1975 Chad joined the family completing the Fisher family. Jan was the secretary for the First Baptist Church for 30 plus years and was active with many church committees.

Retirement gave time for travel so Jan and Kirk traveled to Germany where Kevin was going to school. Jan spent the summer traveling through Europe. Other trips included Ireland, Scotland, Mexico, Bahamas, Canada, and 37 states where baseball games were attended. With failing health they chose to move back to Alva where their son Chad lives with his wife, Melissa and their three grandkids.

Besides her parents, William and Viola, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Billy Stewart and Dan Stewart.

Jan is survived by her husband, Kirk, of the home; her sons, Kevin Fisher and wife, Michele, of Alexandria, Virginia, and Chad Fisher and wife, Melissa, of Alva; three grandchildren, Braxton, Chloe, and Peyton Fisher all of Alva; one brother, Ed Stewart of Alva; one sister, Sharon Yeager and husband, Bill, of Woodward; other relatives and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Beaver Faculty Scholarship.
