Larry Owens, born June 29, 1942, to Carl Henry Owens and Gwendolyn Maxine Owens, was a son of Beaver city. He helped lead the Beaver Dusters to State Championships. He cruised Douglas in hot rods and drag raced across the bridge. He worked in the oil fields. In Beaver, he started lifelong friendships and a lifelong love of the mechanics of cars.
Larry suffered the loss of his mother Maxine in 1961, and soon gained a new family as Carl married Sylvia Herring. Larry graduated from Beaver High School and attended Oklahoma University in Norman, OK where “that trouble in Norman” led to his expulsion and draft into the armed forces.
After serving in the Army, Larry established an independent auto garage in Santa Fe. He married Camille Chappe in 1971, had son Oscar in 1974, and moved to Santa Barbara, where he authored two books on car repair published by John Muir Publications. His writing continued with instructional material for the emerging technology of diagnostic scanning tools.
In retirement, he returned to New Mexico, then to Beaver to care for Sylvia. He relished time engaging in the creative art of classic car restoration, and appreciated his hometown that had given him so many wonderful memories.. He is survived by his son Oscar and his sister Pat, his step-mother Sylvia, grandchildren Asa and Isaac, and by many people whose lives he brightened with his friendly and kind demeanor, his sense of humor, and his generosity of spirit.
