Listen to Obituary

Erlene Weeks, 92, peacefully passed away on July 25, 2026.

Erlene spent nearly her entire life in the Balko, Oklahoma, community, a place she loved deeply and proudly called home. She graduated from Balko High School in 1952 before continuing her education at Panhandle State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1959. Her passion for education led her back to Panhandle State University, where she completed her degree in Elementary Education in 1967.

Teaching was much more than a career to Erlene—it was her life’s calling. She began her teaching career as a Home Economics teacher at Adams during the 1960–1961 school year. In 1967, she returned to Balko, where she faithfully served as an educator until her retirement in 2001. Throughout her career, she touched the lives of countless students and found great joy in watching generations of young people learn and grow. Long after retiring, she continued to enjoy sharing stories and memories of the many students she had the privilege of teaching.

Erlene loved the Balko community and was proud to invest her life in the people who lived there. Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She especially cherished spending time with her granddaughters and lovingly sewed dresses for them. The moments she treasured most were those spent together with her family, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Senator and Elsie Pugh, and by her sister, Geraldine Chisum.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Charles Weeks and Lynn Weeks; her granddaughters, Alison Weeks and Brittany Arana; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members, former students, and dear friends.

Erlene will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to education, her compassionate heart, her love for children, and the profound impact she made on the lives of generations of students. Her legacy will continue to live on in the countless lives she influenced and in the community she faithfully served for so many years.
